Monroe County’s ACT for Education, Junior Achievement and the Monroe County Business Association’s annual celebration and recognition of the collaborations between locals schools and businesses with an annual community champion award recognition and breakfast celebration. After a two year break due to COVID-19, this year's HF-L recipient as nominated by High School Business Teacher Elizabeth Rollins is Dyer Straights.
- My first thought would be Dyer Straights, owners Walt and Barb Dyer. They open their business for class visits and sports teams to practice. I think this would be a great recognition for them. -Liz Rollins
Dyer Straights - Driving Range is a seasonal golf driving range that normally opens for the season in mid-April and runs until Walt and Barb head south for the winter. Walt Dyer is a well-known former educator and coach in HF-L, and he and Barb wanted to provide an active and healthy option to the people of the community. Each year they employ local students (both high school and college) to help manage and cut the grass and collect the golf balls. Most times you will find either Walt or Barb, or both doing any one of the many jobs at the Straights. They welcome HF-L students in Physical Education classes for a minimal fee, offer the same reduced fee to student-athletes in the golf program, and continue each year to be part of the large contingent of fans and spectators at late spring and early fall events.
They will be formally recognized at a breakfast on May 6, 2022, at BOCES 2 in Spencerport.
Thank you and congratulations to Barb and Walt Dyer.
